Gross markup, contribution margin and profit are different numbers
Gross markup compares the selling price with the product cost. Sell for €24.90 an item that costs €4.92 at the supplier and the markup is 5.1×, a gross difference of €19.98. Most claims about the “average dropshipping margin” refer to this number, and it leaves out most of your costs.
Contribution margin subtracts every cost tied to one order: the product, shipping to the customer, payment processing, packaging, expected refunds and the advertising needed to win that order. Profit is what remains after fixed costs such as apps, your Shopify plan and your own time.
With paid traffic, the largest variable cost is usually the cost per purchase (CPA). A product can carry a 5× markup and still lose money if each sale needs more ad spend than the gross difference.
What stores charge over the supplier: data from 741 products
We took every product in the Ads Bench winners ranking, the products whose Meta ads keep running and scaling, and compared its store price with the cheapest AliExpress listing our image search matched with at least 50 orders. Currencies were converted to euros at approximate rates. 741 products had a cheaper supplier listing and a plausible match.
The median store price was €19.77 and the median supplier listing €4.23. The median markup was 4.4×: a quarter of the products sold for less than 2.8× and a quarter for more than 7.1×. 71% sold for at least three times the supplier price and 43% for at least five times. Only 12% were below 2×.
| Store price | Products | Supplier | Median markup | Gross difference |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Under €20 | 405 | €3.39 | 3.7× | €9.78 |
| €20 to €35 | 224 | €4.92 | 5.4× | €20.73 |
| €35 to €50 | 56 | €5.82 | 6.9× | €32.99 |
| €50 to €80 | 28 | €11.08 | 5.4× | €45.90 |
| €80 and over | 28 | €21.16 | 5.6× | €86.56 |

Why cheaper products need a higher markup
Under €20, the median gross difference was €9.78. That amount has to cover shipping, fees and every euro of advertising behind the sale. If each order costs you €9.78 in ads, nothing is left.
That is why the markup rises with price up to about €50. In the €20 to €35 band the median gross difference was €20.73, twice the cheaper band, while the supplier cost only rose by €1.53.
Above €50 the markup stops rising (5.4× and 5.6×), but the absolute gap keeps growing. A higher ticket leaves more room to absorb advertising costs, at the price of a harder sale.
Ads that stay live for weeks are the best public sign that a product sells at a profit: few stores keep paying for traffic that does not pay for itself. But your own margin depends on your costs, which is what the calculation below works out.
How to calculate your dropshipping margin before testing
Start from the landed cost, not the AliExpress headline price. Landed cost = product + shipping to the customer + packaging + payment fees (percentage and fixed part) + an allowance for refunds.
Break-even CPA = selling price − landed cost. It is the most you can pay in ads for one order without losing money. Break-even ROAS = selling price ÷ break-even CPA.
| Line | Example | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Selling price | €24.90 | Your price, VAT included if you display it that way |
| Product (supplier) | −€4.92 | Median supplier price in the €20 to €35 band |
| Shipping to the customer | −€3.50 | Your shipping quote (illustrative) |
| Payment fees | −€1.02 | 2.9% + €0.30 (check your provider) |
| Refund allowance | −€0.75 | 3% of the price (illustrative) |
| Break-even CPA | €14.71 | Price minus the lines above |
| Break-even ROAS | 1.69 | €24.90 ÷ €14.71 |
Illustrative figures except the supplier price. VAT and income tax are not included.
Turn the break-even numbers into a decision
In the example you can pay up to about €14.71 in ads per order. If your tests usually cost more than that per purchase, you need a higher price, a bundle that raises the order value or a cheaper landed cost. Launching anyway only turns the gap into ad spend.
If you charge VAT inside the price, take it out first. In Portugal (23%) a €24.90 price contains €4.66 of VAT, and in Germany (19%) €3.98. That comes straight out of the break-even CPA.
Repeat the calculation for each shipping country. The same product can work in one market and not in another only because of delivery cost and VAT.
Strikethrough prices and .99 endings: what winning stores do
91% of the prices ended between .89 and .99, and only 6% were round numbers. Charm pricing is the default, not a differentiator.
27% of the products showed a compare-at price, the crossed-out “was” price. When they did, the median displayed discount was 50%.
If you sell in the EU, be careful. Since the Omnibus Directive (EU 2019/2161), an announced price reduction has to reference the lowest price you charged in the previous 30 days. A permanent “was” price that never existed is a legal risk, not a tactic.
What is a good profit margin for dropshipping?
There is no universal number. Figures such as “20 to 30% net” are opinions unless someone shows the orders behind them. What public data does show is where stores with sustained ads set their prices: most at three times the supplier listing or more, with cheaper products at the low end of that range.
A workable test is whether your break-even CPA can pay for the cost per purchase you have actually achieved. Without that history, a markup under 3× on a product under €20 leaves very little room; in our sample only 12% of winning products sold below 2×.
Price competition matters too. Where no other store was running a product’s creatives, the median store price was €25.79 at 5.0× the supplier. Where one to five other stores ran them, it fell to €17.19, with a markup of 3.8× to 4.0×. That is a correlation, not a rule, but it is what a price war looks like.
Each product page in the winners ranking now shows how many other stores are running the same creatives, and which ones. Check it before you commit to a price, and for a fuller comparison use the product saturation checklist.
| Other stores with the same creatives | Products | Median store price | Median markup |
|---|---|---|---|
| None | 321 | €25.79 | 5.0× |
| 1 to 2 | 127 | €17.19 | 4.0× |
| 3 to 5 | 127 | €17.19 | 3.8× |
| 6 or more | 53 | €15.47 | 4.1× |

A pricing worksheet to copy
Fill in one row per candidate product. Leave a field empty if you have not verified it instead of guessing.
| Field | What to record |
|---|---|
| Supplier listing | Exact variant, quantity, product price and number of orders |
| Shipping | Price and delivery time to your main country |
| Landed cost | Product + shipping + packaging + fees + refunds |
| Competitors | Price, bundle and compare-at price of comparable stores |
| Break-even CPA | Selling price minus landed cost |
| Break-even ROAS | Selling price divided by break-even CPA |
| Decision | Test, raise the order value with a bundle, or drop the product |
Limits of these numbers
The supplier match comes from an image search, so it can be a similar product rather than the same one. We only used listings with at least 50 orders and left out matches more than 30 times cheaper than the store price, which removes most accessories and wrong variants.
The supplier price excludes shipping, which many AliExpress listings charge separately, and the store price is the first variant only. Bundles and quantity discounts raise the real order value.

Dropshipping profit margin FAQs
What is the average dropshipping profit margin? In our sample the median store price was 4.4× the supplier listing. That is gross markup. Net margin depends on your ad cost per sale, which public data does not show.
How do I calculate dropshipping profit? Selling price minus product, shipping, payment fees, refunds and ad spend per order gives the contribution per order. Subtract fixed monthly costs to get profit.
Is a 3× markup enough? 71% of the winning products we measured sold for 3× or more. Whether it is enough for you depends on your cost per purchase.
Is there a dropshipping profit margin calculator? The worked example above is one: replace each line with your own figures and read the break-even CPA and ROAS.
